Contact the President to issue an Executive Order banning Horse Slaughter
Dear President Obama:
I am contacting you to issue an Executive Order banning horse slaughter and transport for slaughter. To expedite matters, you can use the language in H.R. 503/S. 727.
The list of talking points is long and varied. I present you with just a few:
- Formal and informal polls have shown that a majority of Americans are opposed to the slaughter of our horses, typically 7 out of 10 individuals polled; often as high as 8 out of 10.
- Horse owners, lovers, advocates and members of the horse industry have been working to get a federal law enacted to stop the slaughter of American horses for the past 10 years.
- Said legislation has been strongly favored with widespread bipartisan support, but continuously hindered by special interest groups, thwarting the will of the people.
- Any federal legislation banning the slaughter of American horses has been successfully debated in Committee, and upon reaching a vote, passed by a large margin.
- While there have been no horses legally slaughtered on American soil since 2007, just as many American horses are slaughtered for human consumption across our borders in Mexico and Canada as when they plants were open here in steadily increasing numbers.
- Legislators in numerous states, seemingly at the behest of foreign plant owners, have been working to bring horse slaughter back to U.S. soil meaning burdensome, dangerous environmental impact.
- Horses are not raised as food animals, but as sporting, leisure, service and companion animals. Therefore, they are routinely give medications banned from food producing animals.
- According to reported statistics, 2/3rds of the horses slaughtered in Mexico and Canada for human consumption are American horses.
- Horse abuse and abandonment has not increased since the shutting of horse slaughter plants in the U.S., economics conditions has.
- Horse slaughter is not, and cannot be made, humane, as has been proved wherever horse slaughter exists.
While I appreciate this may be an unprecedented step, I am appealing to you to take this action as a matter of last resort.
Please issue an Executive Order banning horse slaughter and export for slaughter for human consumption at your earliest opportunity.
Thank you for taking this necessary step to protect America’s equines.
