100,000 HORSES ARE SLAUGHTERED EACH YEAR
Approximately 100,000 horses are shipped out of the country to Mexico and Canada each year to horrific fates. Many are sent to Mexico to be slaughtered alive. In Mexico, the horse is intentionally paralyzed by having its spinal cord severed. While still conscious and alert the horse is repeatedly stabbed with a small knife about the body. The people that wish to consume this meat believe that horses slaughtered with these "puntilla" knives produce more flavorful meat, the horse is AWAKE during this horrifically brutal process.
In Canada, horses are supposed to be shot in the head and thus rendered unconscious however, many are awake when they are being brutally slaughtered. This report by the Canadian Horse Defense Council uncovered numerous humane violations and atrocities, clearly indicating that horses cannot be humanely slaughtered and that many were awake during their vivisection!
The transport of horses to slaughter is just another clog in the brutal slaughter machine. Horses are shipped for days without food, water and rest. Many times horses are crammed onto double decker trucks and arrive at the feed lot or slaughter plant severly injured from being trampled, kicked, bitten or any multitude of other events that occur when large, scared animals are packed like sardines onto death mobiles.
There is now a renewed effort to pass the H.R. 503 - this bill would end the transport of horses across the borders into neighboring states and international borders for slaughter.
